20.05.10
Jet2 has opened its new base at East Midlands Airport with a flight to the Cypriot resort of Paphos. The budget airline will also fly to the Canary isles of Lanzarote and Tenerife, Dalaman in Turkey, the Greek islands of Corfu and Crete and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, and said its new operation would create 250 jobs, including 80 at the airport.
It will offer more than 130,000 seats a year from the airport. Ian Doubtfire, managing director at Jet2, said the expansion would provide ‘substantial employment opportunities within the travel and leisure industry’. The airline will initially base one aircraft at the airport, making nine flights each week to seven destinations, but an extra plane will fly from the East Midlands starting in the summer of 2011.
The airline also plans to offer flights to Chambery in France and Geneva in Switzerland. Other new destinations for 2011 are to include Alicante and Palma in Spain, Faro in Portugal, Bodrum in Turkey and the Greek islands of Rhodes. Jet2 will have 22 weekly departures from East MIdlands Airport by summer 2011.
