East Midlands Airport passengers head for the sun

Travellers heading out of East Midlands Airport last month were keen to leave the cold behind and catch some winter sun. Although passenger figures for the airport for January show that Dublin was the most popular destination, the number of people heading to Malaga, Alicante and Tenerife were not too far behind, and between them outnumbered Dublin almost three-to-one.
295,821 passengers travelled from the airport during the month of January - a 28 percent increase on the same period in 2006 (230,924). 18,081 passengers flew from East Midlands to Dublin, with flights to both Malaga and Alicante carried over 17,000 travellers, and more than 15,000 passgenrs taking flights to Tenerife.
Overall, international scheduled traffic increased by 40 percent comapred to the same period in 2005. Domestic scheduled services grew by 21 percent and inclusive tour and charter services grew by 4 percent.
Penny Coates, East Midlands Airport managing director said: 'This is a really strong start to a new year and we are confident the growth trend will continue during the rest of 2007. This year we're adding a number of new destinations and increasing our long-haul portfolio further.'
During 2006, East Midlands Airport experienced its busiest year ever - more than 4.7 million people travelled to and from the Castle Donington site.
