Heavy snow closes East Midlands Airport

East Midlands Airport was forced to close its runway for 40 minutes last night due to heavy snow. Four planes were diverted to Birmingham or Manchester where the weather conditions were less severe.
An airport spokesman said the sheer volume of unforeseen snow in a short space of time had meant it could not keep the runway open.
