19.10.07
A new flight between East Midlands Airport and Islamabad via Sharjah in the Middle East is due to take off today. To celebrate its first flights to Pakistan, the hub has organised a special celebration.
The airport's check in hall will host a cultural music festival today to see off the first passengers using the UK International Airlines (UKIA) flight. A spokesman said that they hope the music will create a 'vibrant and lively' atmosphere around the area as travellers prepare to board their flights.
Penny Coates, managing director at East Midlands Airport, said: 'This flight is a fantastic endorsement of our first-class facilities here at the airport and is a real coup for everyone involved in developing this link to a new country. The service has generated positive interest so far and we are sure the people of the East Midlands region and beyond will make good use of this route.'
UKIA, a new Sheffield based airline, plans to offer twice-weekly flights to Islamabad via Sharjah, near Dubai, each Tuesday and Friday. A previously reported, the airline hopes operate flights from Gatwick, Manchester and East Midlands Airport to Islamabad, Lahore and Sharjah. Future plans also include flights between the UK and Dhaka, Kathmandu, points in India and to Gambia in Africa. Its fleet currently consists of two Boeing 767-200.
