Two light aircraft were involved in a fatal mid-air collision over Staffordshire near East Midlands Airport yesterday lunchtime, Leicestershire Police confirmed. All incoming flights to the airport were diverted to Birmingham Airport and outgoing flights were delayed after one of the planes made an emergency landing.
One of the two light aircraft landed safely at East Midlands Airport even though it had lost most of its' landing gear and all three people on board were uninjured. The other plane landed near Blithfield Reservoir in Staffordshire and there are believed to be two fatalities.
The airport followed its full emergency procedures and the airport runway was blocked even though the aircraft was not reported to have been badly damaged. The three people on board were checked over by medics.
The second plane came down in a field near Blithfield Reservoir in Rugeley, Staffordshire around 25 miles away from East Midlands Airport. Firefighters were called to initial reports of a grass fire found the wreckage of the light aircraft. Air Crash investigators were at the site.
Nine flights were diverted to Birmingham International Airport and two were cancelled while the runway was closed. It re-opened shortly after 15:00.
