Record year for East Midlands Airport
17.01.08
The number of passengers passing through East Midlands Airport hit an all time record last year. A total of 5,414,299 passengers used the airport, an increase of 14.5 percent over 2006, as the launch of new routes boosted the number of people jetting off from the hub. December also saw passenger numbers rise for the 12th successive month with 377,929 travellers arriving and departing, an increase of 16.7% over the same month in 2006.
Penny Coates, the airport's managing director, said: 'This record increase in passengers demonstrates the demand in the region for local access to air travel. I'm delighted with the public response to the wide choice of destinations we're now able to offer. The challenge for us is to build on this fantastic performance and to continue to deliver the services the region deserves.'
In 2007, East Midlands Airport added to its portfolio of European destinations with 5 new routes from Ryanair - Cork, Tenerife, Belfast, Poznan and Alicante, and the arrival of Scandinavian airline Sterling operating flights to Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. The airport also saw long-haul services increase with the launch of Airtours charter flights to Jamaica.
