easyJet still selling flights to be cancelled at East Midlands Airport
15.09.09
People planning to fly out of East Midlands Airport from next January are being urged to exercise caution when booking flights with easyJet. The budget airline announced that it would be withdrawing from the regional base early next year, but because of employment law complications it is still selling tickets for well beyond that period – and will have to continue doing so for several weeks.
The flights problem has been caused because easyJet's plans are subject to a 90-day consultation period – intended to protect the 120 staff who face redundancy. While the airline is unlikely to change its plans, and will stop all flights from the airport from January 10 next year, the rules of the consultation period state that nothing can be done to prejudice negotiations, and that includes cancelling flights. This means passengers will only be officially told about the cancellations in December, as little as four weeks before their flight.
