East Midlands Airport named world's most environmentally friendly
13.10.07
East Midlands Airport has been named the most eco-friendly airport in the world. The airport won the World Travel Award for its approach to the environment and was praised for aiming to become carbon neutral by 2012. However, environmental campaigners say if it is to deserve the award, it must not expand further.
The airport has picked up the Eco Friendly Airport award, voted for by more than 165,000 travel agencies and professionals in more than 200 countries worldwide. As recently reported, the airport plans to install wind turbines to generate 10% of on-site electricity. An airport spokesman said it was proud of its environmental achievements.
But the Plane Stupid direct action climate change campaign group said that the CO2 produced by the airport was the same as the African country of Mali. A spokesman said: 'We are looking at an aviation industry that is set to expand but everyone knows we've got to cut back on air travel.'
'We blame the aviation industry and the airports - they market aggressively and they get incentives. We have to cut our CO2 emissions and cut them radically.'
