Flights to Spain / Portugal hit by ash
12.05.10
Safety rules governing flights in UK and Irish airspace have been eased following the Iceland volcano, the CAA has announced today, as flights between the UK and Europe, and transatlantic services continue to be hit by the ash cloud. Passengers have been facing more disruption as the ash forced parts of Spain, Portugal, Morocco and the Canary Islands to close their airspace.
Ryanair cancelled flights between UK airports including East Midlands and Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands yesterday due to the volcanic ash cloud. The 06:50 departure from East Midlands to Lanzarote and the 09:50 flight to Faro were both cancelled.
UK airports remain open today, but dozens of flights were cancelled and delayed, even though the CAA has now cleared the way for more flights by lifting the 60-mile no-fly buffer zone imposed around dense ash. Flights between Cardiff and European destinations, as well as connecting transatlantic flights from Cardiff via other hubs, were expected to be disrupted today due to volcanic ash.
A CAA spokesman said its decision to remove the buffer zone was taken with the Irish Aviation Authority after three weeks of evidence gathering. He said its goal is to allow as much flying as safely possible. But both Ryanair and easyJet confirmed they had been forced to scrap flights to Europe as the problems from the volcano continued. Airport operator BAA has also warned of delays to transatlantic services and cancellations by airlines. Both airlines and airports urged passengers to check updated information before travelling.
