Climate change protest at East Midlands Airport
12.04.08
Dozens of people dressed as Prime Minister Gordon Brown are to stage a protest against climate change at East Midlands Airport today.
East Midlands Friends of the Earth, which is holding the protest, is calling for the government's new Climate Change Bill to include carbon emissions for the aviation industry, as well as shipping. In its current form, the law will cover most business sectors but not aviation or shipping. However, it will make the UK the first country to put carbon emissions reduction targets into law.
A spokeswoman for the group, Callie Lister, said it was ‘crazy to leave out emissions from planes and ships. Why should our local industry and businesses be held to account for their carbon emissions but not the aviation industry? Having a climate change law that doesn't include our share of international aviation emissions is like having a drink-driving law that exempts those who drink whisky.’
As planes fly over East Midlands Airport today, the protesters will cover their eyes ‘hoping emissions will just go away’. In a statement, the airport said: ‘Airlines are responsible for the emissions from their aircraft and the airport supports environmental projects, including the European Union's Emissions Trading Scheme.’
