Food waste fuels East Midlands Airport buses
09.11.09
East Midlands Airport is pioneering environmentally-friendly shuttle buses powered by organic waste. The airport is thought to be the first in the world to trial the Liquid Biomethane-powered vehicles, used for its passenger transfer buses.
The gas used to power the buses is produced by the decomposition of biomass, such as food by-products. The gas is extracted from landfill sites or by-products produced by industries like food manufacture.
Over the next six months the carbon neutral vehicles will be compared to existing diesel vehicles. Officials hope the use of the fuel will result in air quality improvements, a reduction in CO2 emissions and reduced costs. Airport officials said they are already halfway to their target of becoming carbon neutral for their ground operations by 2012.
