Council question East Midlands noisy flight fines
07.10.09
Leicestershire County Council says airlines that cause disturbance as they fly in and out of East Midlands Airport may not be receiving big enough fines, the Leicester Mercury reports. The council has asked airport managers for proof its penalty of around £1,000 is enough of a deterrent. They have also criticised the airport for relying on information from 1996 to prove they do not need to do much more to tackle noise pollution.
The issues were raised are part of the authority's response to the airport's draft noise action plan. A council spokesman told the newspaper: ‘The plan restates the operation of the penalty scheme. Whilst some information has been given on the number of fines and income from those fines there is no indication on whether the fines are a sufficient deterrent.'
Councillor Max Hunt, County Hall's Labour leader, is calling on the council to reject the plan outright. He said: ‘There's a feeling that East Midlands Airport are simply ticking the boxes.‘
