East Midlands Airport noise fund gives £400,000
06.06.09
More than £400,000 has been given to good causes in places suffering from the roar of jets flying to and from East Midlands Airport. The figures were revealed as the airport marked the seventh anniversary of its community fund, set up to compensate towns and villages affected by plane noise pollution at night.
Fines are collected from airlines when their flights breach the airport's noise level guidelines. The airport also contributes £50,000 a year to the fund. Since the fund was set up, more than 500 groups have benefited from grants totalling £438,739. Clubs, churches, schools and other organisations are entitled to apply for grants.
