62,000 cigarettes seized at East Midlands Airport
06.02.08
Two men were caught trying to smuggle 62,000 cigarettes into the UK via East Midlands Airport over the weekend. One of them was a 70 year old pensioner.
The authorities swooped as the pair arrived on a flight from the Canary Isles on Sunday. The 70-year-old Sunderland OAP and a man in his mid 20s, also from the city, were stopped by Customs officers as they arrived at East Midlands Airport.
The revenue loss on the huge haul, which was discovered in their baggage, is about £11,350. John Macmillan, detection manager for HM Revenue & Customs at East Midlands airport, said that no arrests were made but investigations were ongoing. The cigarettes will be incinerated to make power for the national grid.
