New tree sculpture at East Midlands Airport
05.03.09
East Midlands Airport is 'branching out' with the installation of a new tree sculpture that appears to break through the floor and reach up to the terminal ceiling. The sculpture, which was unveiled by transport secretary Geoff Hoon last week, provides a 'unique welcome' for passengers, the airport said.
As well as having a symbolic meaning relating to growth and success, the tree has been declared a 'kissing zone' where people can be reunited with loved ones who are returning from overseas. The sculpture also features three television screens that show some of the famous places to visit in the East Midlands region.
Penny Coates, the airport's managing director, said: 'The tree symbolises not only how far the region has come in terms of innovation and growth, but also signifies the dynamic future for tourism in the East Midlands. The aim is to both inform and inspire passengers.'
