Delegates have jetted out to a major airline routes conference to try and attract more flights to Durham Tees Valley airport.
Some of the world's largest airlines and operators are at the 13th World Routes Conference in Stockholm, Sweden this week. The three-day convention, which started on Sunday and ends today, offers a chance to showcase North-east England to potential airlines who could expand the region's connections across the globe, a spokesman for the airport said.
The North-east is represented in force, with Durham Tees Valley Airport, regional development agency One NorthEast and Newcastle Airport all attending. Meetings at the previous Routes conference in Dubai are reported to have played a key role in bringing Emirates' direct Newcastle - Dubai flights to the region.
Both Durham Tees Valley and Newcastle airports have enjoyed significant success in attracting new routes in recent years. Richard Whitehouse, development manager at Durham Tees Valley Airport, called it the 'foremost route development conference in the world' and said meetings were planned with current and potential airlines during the event.
