Free bus service to Durham Tees Valley Airport axed
20.01.09
A free bus service to Durham Tees Valley Airport is being axed due to ‘declining demand’. The airport announced today that its ‘Sky Express’ service linking Durham Tees Valley Airport and Darlington Station will end next week.
Airport director Kerry Quinn blamed a declining demand for the service, which has operated since April 2005, making it no longer viable. She said: ‘It is disappointing that we have had to withdraw Sky Express, but despite positive growth in usage over the first two years, more recently demand has fallen to an unsustainable level. With a high percentage of outbound passengers at Durham Tees Valley Airport, this service is clearly not attractive to travellers, even though it was being provided free.’
The service received initial financial support from the Durham and Tees Valley Partnerships but that ended in late Spring 2007 and since then it has been fully funded by the airport. It will cease to operate after January 25.
