Plane spotters at Durham Tees Valley Airport to help police
19.07.07
Plane spotters may be recruited by police to help safeguard Durham Tees Valley Airport from criminals and terrorists. Durham Police want to create an airport watch scheme to monitor movements around the airport. The plane spotters would be used as 'extra eyes and ears' for uniformed police officers and on-site airport security staff.
A police spokesman said: 'We have thought for some time the plane spotters who visit Durham Tees Valley may be a very useful source of information. They are at the site on a regular basis and could potentially be the first to spot any suspicious activity. This idea has worked in other areas and if there are sufficient numbers interested, it could be just as effective up here.
Bosses at the airport have welcomed the proposal as a way to enhance the safety of passengers. Nicola Baines, airport services manager, said: 'Such a scheme will allow the police and other agencies to share information more easily and effectively.'
A similar scheme is already in operation at Bristol Airport. Enthusiasts are being invited to a meeting at the airport later this month to discuss how it could be set up.
