Durham Tees Valley Airport announced that passengers using the airport in March increased by over 16% compared to the same month in 2007. Over 46,000 passengers passed through the terminal in March, with passengers on low cost services showing significant growth.
Flyglobespan had a busy month at Durham Tees Valley, with passengers taking their winter sun flights to Alicante, Malaga, Palma, Lanzarote and Tenerife. And over 3,000 passengers used the twice a week service to Warsaw with low fares airline Wizz Air.
The beginning of March also saw the launch of flights to Alicante with Ryanair. The airline now operates flights three times a week to the popular holiday destination, adding to its established routes of Dublin and Barcelona Girona.
Emma Ormerod, Marketing and Communications Manager, Durham Tees Valley Airport, said: ‘There’s no doubt the recent bad weather has helped to attract passengers to Durham Tees Valley Airport. Airlines such as Flyglobespan, Ryanair and Wizz Air are expected to provide the airport with significant growth over the coming year’.
April is expected to see an even bigger boost in passengers, when Flyglobespan launch their summer programme to Alicante, Palma, Jersey, Faro, Malaga and Tenerife. It will also see the start of flights by a number of tour operators’ to 13 popular holiday destinations.
