Chemical emergency at Durham Tees Valley Airport
16.02.08
Special emergency crews raced to Durham Tees Valley Airport yesterday after a chemical spill on an aircraft. Four fire crews and ambulance teams were called to the airport at 19:49 after a leak of 1.5 litres of sodium hydroxide solution - which can be used as paint stripper and has the potential to cause intense heat burns or ignite flammables.
Fire officers wearing chemical protection outfits neutralised the spill with a dry agent before decontamination of the TNT aircraft and two gas tankers. One person who came into contact with the solution was given first aid at the scene but returned to work.
A spokesperson for Durham Tees Valley Airport said airport and local authority specialist teams dealt with the spillage. The incident was confined to one of the airport hangers and did not affect airport operations.
