Durham Tees Valley Airport evacuated after gas leak
13.11.07
Passengers were delayed after a gas leak led to the evacuation of Durham Tees Valley Airport and neighbouring St George's airport hotel yesterday. The leak was caused by a mechanical digger which ruptured a gas main behind the hotel at about noon.
Fire crews - including some using specialist gas detection kit and hazard risk experts - plus gas board engineers were called out to deal with the incident. An inbound flight from Dublin was allowed to land at about 13:30 but over 130 passengers had to remain on board the plane while emergency services resolved the problem.
The terminal re-opened shortly after 14:15, also delaying an outbound flight. Durham Police, who had been called to set up an exclusion zone and divert traffic, arrested two suspected illegal immigrants whilst there.
A spokeswoman for the airport apologised for the inconvenience the incident caused.
