Luggage scare at Durham Tees Valley Airport
13.04.07
Durham Tees Valley Airport was closed yesterday after a 'suspicious suitcase' lead to an evacuation of the terminal.
Army bomb disposal experts were called to the airport, near Darlington, on yesterday morning when security staff raised the alarm. Following a scan of the luggage all passengers and staff were told to leave the terminal, but the suitcase was later found to be empty.
Two flights, a KLM flight and an Eastern Airlines flight from Aberdeen, were forced to circling the airport. A bmi flight from London did land but passengers were not allowed off the plane.
The airport reopened at about 09:45, after being closed for just over two hours. Durham Police have launched an investigation to find the owner of the luggage which caused the scare.
