Man arrested at Durham Tees Valley Airport with £69m cheques freed on bail

A man facing trial for possessing forged cheques and bankers' drafts totalling £69m as he tried to fly out from Durham Tees Valley Airport was freed on bail on Friday. In court his lawyer said he was not a terrorist and was not seeking to fund terrorism.
As previously reported, Omar Mohammed, a 49 year old businessman, was arrested last year at Durham Tees Valley Airport on his way to Egypt. The Jordanian father-of-three, who has an English wife and lives in the North East, was freed after spending three months in prison on remand after Teesside Crown Court prosecutor Shaun Dodds said that there was no objection to his release.
His barrister, Tom Mitchell, told the court that Mr. Mohammed was not a terrorist and has no terrorist connections. Mr Mitchell said the absence of tight security in the Middlesbrough courtroom confirmed the statement he made on behalf of his client.
Judge Peter Armstrong granted bail with conditions that Mr. Mohammed must live at his current home, be under a curfew with electronic tagging between 21:00 and 07:00, report daily to Middlesbrough police station, surrender his passport and must not apply for any travel documents to leave the country.
Mr. Mohammed of Manor Wood, Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough, denies possessing an article for use in fraud on October 12 namely false cheques and false banker's drafts and a false bank guarantee.
