Newts rescued from Durham Tees Valley Airport hotel swimming pool
12.04.08
A rescue operation is being carried out to move hundreds of newts living in a half-built swimming pool at a Durham Tees Valley Airport hotel. It is hoped a new pond will be built on the site, so the newts can be returned.
The pool was the first stage of a hotel scheme at the airport, but the developer went bankrupt and the amphibians took up residence. Now the development has been taken over by Sven Investments, who has called in conservationists to shift the newts so the site can be developed.
Among the newts are the protected great crested variety. Sven Investments wants to build business units at the airport, and called in conservation organisation Naturally Wild to carry out the removal operation yesterday.
A spokeswoman for the developer said: ‘They will be taken to a more newt-friendly temporary home, but we are hoping to create a pond on the site so they can come back later.’
