Security alert at Durham Tees Valley Airport
08.09.09
Three Latvian men were arrested after a security alert at Durham Tees Valley Airport yesterday evening. They were checking-in to catch a KLM flight to Amsterdam at around 5pm, when staff became concerned that they were drunk. At that time one of the men pulled an alarm clock from his bag and shouted three times that it was 'a bomb'.
Airport security staff immediately detained the men, who were later arrested by police. The men, aged 26, 45 and 54, were interviewed at Darlington Police Station, where it was established the incident had been a drunken 'joke'. The 45-year-old who had made the bomb claim was given a formal caution and his fellow travellers were released with no further action. There were no delays caused to flights.
