Hand luggage restrictions to remain at Durham Tees Valley Airport
06.01.08
Passengers flying from Durham Tees Valley Airport have been warned not to bring more than one piece of hand luggage. Hand luggage rules are being relaxed at 22 UK airports from tomorrow (Monday January 7), however, Durham Tees Valley is not one of them.
Since a tightening of security in August 2006 following the transatlantic liquid bomb plot, passengers at UK airports have been restricted to one piece of hand luggage. But the one-bag rule will be lifted at 22 airports, including Heathrow, Stansted, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester and Cardiff from tomorrow.
However, a number of major airports including Gatwick, Luton, Leeds Bradford and Durham Tees Valley have yet to satisfy the Department for Transport (DfT) that they can cope with the change without compromising security (and increasing queues).
A spokesman for the airport said it will continue with discussions about lifting the rule. The Government has indicated it would like to see the new rules implemented at all airports by the end of the May, and it is unclear whether Durham Tees Valley will be ready ahead of this date.
Each airport is being individually approved by the Government, and the list of approved airports will be detailed on http://www.DfT.gov.uk/transportforyou/airtravel/airportsecurity/cabinbaggage.
