Durham Tees Valley Airport cab deal angers drivers
01.08.08
A group of independent taxi drivers is threatening legal action after Durham Tees Valley Airport signed an access deal with a single operator, the BBC reports. The cabbies claim officials at the airport did not give them adequate notice.
The airport says it is satisfied with its tendering process and that a single company will better serve passengers. But more than a dozen angry drivers say they intend to continue to pick up passengers at the airport.
A spokesman for the group, Dave Finnigan, told the BBC: ‘I think what they have done is not just unethical, but it borders on the illegal. We will be taking this further. I can't believe they are treating us this way.'
'We have not received the proper 28-day notice that our contracts are cancelled. We will be here in the morning to start work and see if the airport allows us onto the premises.’
An airport spokesman said the decision to invite tenders for operations from the taxi rank was a ‘straightforward commercial process’, which was aimed at ensuring a cost-effective and high quality service for customers. He said: ‘The new contract comes into effect from 1 August and from the date services from the airport rank will be provided by the successful tender.'
‘We can understand that other taxi operators may feel disappointed that they have not been successful in the tender process. But we believe that the decision to place airport taxi services with a single company is in the best interests of both our customers and the company.’
