Coventry Airport air museum celebrates 70th anniversary of jet flight
28.05.11
Iconic aircraft will take to the skies from Coventry Airport this weekend, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the world’s first jet flown by Sir Frank Whittle. The Airbase museum, which is home to 30 vintage planes, will host the celebration with a series of aviation activities over the bank holiday weekend.
It is 70 years since air commodore Sir Frank Whittle flew the Gloster Meteor, the first jet-powered aircraft. Tracey Owen, Airbase’s marketing manager, said: ‘Sir Frank Whittle was a genius with the invention of the jet engine and there is no better place to celebrate this milestone than at the airbase, the home of Europe’s largest privately owned jet fighter aircraft fleet.’
Visitors can board pleasure flights in the 1930s Dragon Rapide or Percival Prentice to experience the daredevil loop and barrel roll. There will also be face painting, bouncy castles and a children’s treasure hunt. The museum is open from 10:00 until 18:00 until Monday May 30. For more information visit www.airbasecoventry.com
