Coventry Airport to celebrate vintage aircraft arrival anniversary

Former aircrew who flew the Shackleton WR963 will be among the guests celebrating the 20th anniversary of the plane’s arrival in Coventry this weekend. The event is being held at Coventry Airport on Saturday (July 9).
The Shackleton has been lovingly restored by keen volunteers since it was brought to Coventry in 1991. Now the names of two of its former flyers, Group Captain Dave Hencken and Squadron Leader John Cubberley, have been printed on the aircraft, and they will be unveiled at a special ceremony on the day.
Dave Woods, a volunteer with the Shackleton Preservation Trust, said: ‘The Shackleton will be unveiled at 13:00. There will be an engine run at 15:00 and we will be raffling a seat on the aircraft for the run. There will be representatives from No 8 Squadron from RAF Waddington. There will also be plenty of aircrew who flew it in the 1950s and 1960s so there will be some great stories.’
