Councillor urges locals to back Bristol Airport expansion
30.05.10
Following the approval of a £150million expansion of Bristol Airport, despite opposition from local residents, North Somerset Council's deputy leader Elfan Ap Rees has urged councillors to take advantage of the financial contributions the airport has agreed to make other developments for supporting the application, the Mercury reports.
He said: ‘To those objecting, by carrying on this way you will kill the goose that lays the golden egg.’ He said the best way to see an improvement in traffic conditions in villages would be to support the plan and reap the benefits of a condition that would see the airport pay towards road improvements.
The expansion will be subject to 69 planning conditions and a legal agreement being entered into by the airport and the council. The financial contributions include more than £4million towards the cost of a new link road between the A370 and A38, more cash to improve existing and new bus services from Weston and £100,000 towards an environmental improvement fund.
The decision must now be ratified by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government due to a part of the development (more airport parking) within the green belt.
