Bristol Airport car park refund refused for passenger who could not fly

A passenger due to fly from Bristol Airport last weekend has lost the money he spent booking a parking space, the BBC reports. Roy Sanderson was due to fly to Cyprus on Sunday but his flight was cancelled by the airline amid the chaos caused by the volcanic ash over UK airspace. However, despite over-stay car parking fees being waived by the airport for passengers delayed coming back to the city, outbound passengers who did not book flexible (cancellable) parking will not receive a refund.
Mr Sanderson told BBC Bristol ‘I paid up-front for £46 airport parking and it seems I've lost that. I'm being refunded by EasyJet, and theirs was a non-refundable flight, and they've done the decent thing and refunded my fare. The hire car company, likewise, are refunding me, but my car parking fee seems to be non-refundable.’
James Gore from Bristol Airport said Mr Sanderson, like other passengers booking at the car park, had the chance to make his booking ‘flexible’. He said: 'When he paid up-front he was given the choice between a flexible booking and non-flexible booking. The difference is made very clear at the point of purchase - the price difference is between £2 and £3.'
‘By offering those two products we provide a choice between the cheapest possible parking price or a slightly higher fee but peace of mind and the ability to change, amend and get a refund. A large number of passengers have paid that additional fee for the ability to amend their booking in the event of a cancellation. We do make the choice very clear.’
But Mr Sanderson said when he booked the choice on the airport's website ‘certainly wasn't clear’. He said: ‘It's not as if I've cancelled it - it's been cancelled by the aviation industry. I've not cancelled, they've cancelled.’
