Residents slam Bristol Airport expansion plans
23.01.09
Local residents and environmentalists have criticised plans to expand Bristol Airport, put on show at the airport for the next six weeks, the Bristol Post reports. The £150-million development includes a bigger terminal, new car parking and a hotel, with a further five or six planes taking off or landing every hour during peak times, which the airport claims will create 4,000 jobs by 2017.
.
As a six-week public consultation began, there was heavy criticism of the plans from people living nearby and campaigners against its expansion. Residents told the newspaper they were dismayed to hear that an extra four million passengers a year could be travelling through the airport by the time the expansion is complete. And environmentalists from the Stop Bristol Airport Expansion (SBAE) said claims that the scheme would contribute more than £340m to the area's economy had not been explained.
