Bristol Airport expansion ‘reckless and unnecessary’
19.06.09
Anti-expansion campaigners have branded plans submitted by Bristol Airport this week as 'reckless and unnecessary', the Mercury reports. Stop Bristol Airport Expansion(SBAE) say the airport must not be allowed to go ahead with the £150m scheme lodged with North Somerset Council this week.
The airport wants to expand its facilities to be in a position to cope with an increase in annual passenger numbers by 60 percent to 10million. If the planning application, which includes a terminal extension, more aircraft parking stands, a multi-storey car park and new airport hotel, is successful work will start next year.
SBAE says the proposal should not be approved until green technologies and transport links are in place. Its spokesman said: ‘We believe that these plans for expansion are reckless and unnecessary.’ Passengers at the airport are down by around 20% this year, so they could well make the point on the need for the expansion at this time.
