New forecourt vehicle ban at Bristol Airport

The forecourt at Bristol Airport is to be closed to all traffic including taxis and buses as part of tough new security measures at the hub, it was announced yesterday.
At present, buses and taxis from the airport's official firm are allowed to pick up and set down passengers outside the terminal building. But new safety recommendations after the terror attack on Glasgow Airport last summer have meant that tighter restrictions are being introduced across the country, which will see all vehicles from stopping in front of the terminal in two years' time.
James Gore, a spokesman for Bristol Airport, said: ‘We are in the very early stages of planning at the moment, but we will have to introduce these new measures. Initial plans include the addition of strengthened barriers and excluding all non-airport vehicles from the forecourt. In the longer term, the forecourt area will be enlarged and pedestrianised, with the road moved beyond the required 30m exclusion zone.'
However Paul Kehoe, chief executive of Bristol Airport, revealled that the move would have some positive benefits. He said: 'Redesigning the forecourt and adjacent roadway will give us the opportunity to better manage pick-up and set-down by public transport and further encourage the use of our Flyer service - which will retain a key position as close to the terminal building as allowed under the new regulations.’
