Bristol Airport objects to wind turbine
09.05.10
Bristol Airport has objected to a local firm's plan to build a wind turbine to generate green electricity because it could be mistaken for an plane by air traffic controllers. The airport has said in an official objection to Smart Systems' plan for a 65-metre structure that it could show up as an aircraft on air traffic control radars, causing a hazard.
The airport's planning and environment director, Alan Davies, made the comments in a letter to North Somerset Council's planning department this week. He said: ‘The uncertainty of what the object is could result in air traffic controllers becoming distracted and focusing attention on this object. This may lead to a more impending matter being missed, with potentially serious implications for safety.’
Mr Davies' letter also states that the turbine's intermittent echo could be mistaken for a plane on radars, which would mean pilots would be instructed to avoid the area, leading to more fuel being burned and noise disturbance.
