08.10.07
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is to take its bogus holiday club campaign to UK airports next week. Representatives will appear at in Glasgow, Manchester, Luton and Bristol Airport between October 12 and 19.
The OFT is launching a campaign to crack down on bogus holiday clubs which cost 400,000 UK consumers more than £1billion every year. The airport campaign is being run in October as this is a peak time for holiday club scams. Members of the OFT Scambusters team and local trading standards officers will be targeting tourists about to fly to resorts such as Tenerife, or Costa del Sol where such scams operate. Spanish authorities are also involved in the campaign in Spain.
The teams will be at Glasgow and Bristol airports on October 12 between 06:00 and 15:00 and at Manchester and Luton airports on October 19 between 06:00 and 15:00.
To fight back against the scammers, the OFT will offer advice and also hand out fake scratchcards similar to those used by scammers luring British tourists but which are scratched off to reveal information and advice regarding the scam.
