New mighty mover at Bristol Airport to help cut bird strikes
07.07.08
Bristol Airport have bought a lawn mower with a bit of a difference, the Western Mercury reports. The two-and-a-half tonne spearhead mower, which is pulled by a six tonne tractor, is being used to keep grass slightly longer as part of measures to help prevent birds being sucked into aircraft engines when they are on the airfield.
Managing the habitat at the airport is important because of the damage birds can cause to planes. Short grass can attract birds, so keeping it slightly longer with the new mower will help cut the risk of bird strikes. In addition, the mower will save time. As 6m wide, it can cut an area the size of a football pitch in just over seven seconds.
