Lufthansa axe Bristol – Frankfurt route
02.04.09
Lufthansa has axed its flights from Bristol Airport to Frankfurt due to a lack of demand from
business travellers. The route had been cut from 21 flights a week to 14 at the start of the winter schedule last year, and will stop altogether on May 1.
The route was launched in a blaze of publicity in November 2007, and started flying in March last year. The cancellation comes just a week after airport bosses said the presence of carriers like Lufthansa demonstrated ‘the resilience of the business market in the South West’.
Marianne Sammann, Lufthansa general manager UK & Ireland, said: ‘Passenger figures for the four months from November to February have dropped around 12 percent compared with the previous four months and this downward trend is not expected to change in the near future. I would be very surprised if we will see a change in demand for Bristol services in 2010.’
Airport aviation director Shaun Browne said: ‘This is disappointing news. The economic conditions have clearly influenced Lufthansa's decision, but we believe this route still has great potential and will be working hard to see the service resume at the soonest opportunity.’
