Blackpool Airport closed by staff sickness

Flights into Blackpool Airport were diverted on Sunday due to staff sickness, the Gazette reports. Two members of staff from the air traffic control tower called in sick, meaning an inbound Jet2 flight from Palma had to land in Manchester. Any smaller pleasure and business aircraft trying to land after 19:30 were advised to make alternative arrangements.
A spokesman for the airport put the reason for its closure down to ‘highly unusual circumstances’. He said three staff usually man the tower, but as two called in sick there was insufficient coverage to man the shifts on the rota. He apologised to passengers who were due to land at the airport and anyone affected.
