Birmingham Airport release new masterplan

Birmingham Airport has released a new 'masterplan' - a blue print for its future direction. The plan includes an extension of the runway and greater emphasis on promoting access to the terminal by public transport. The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, Jim Fitzpatrick, and a number of the region's transport leaders attended a presentation at the airport.
A spokesman said that the new masterplan, entitled 'Towards 2030: Planning A Sustainable Future for Air Transport in the Midlands', outlines how Birmingham Airport 'can grow sustainably whilst meeting the regional demand for air travel over the next 23 years'. The Surface Access Strategy, entitled 'Moving Together,' recognises the importance of surface access to the Airport, set within the context of a sustainable approach, and gives new targets, over a shorter period, up to the year 2012, he added.
The documents include proposals to extend the runway by 405 metres. A planning application for this work is expected to be submitted by the end of the year, which would enable Birmingham International to operate more long haul routes. The plan also includes a target of 25 percent of all people travelling to the airport by public transport by 2012, up from 18 percent last year.
The release of these two important Airport documents follows a lengthy review process, which included consultations and research on the effects of the planned development. Jim Fitzpatrick said: 'I am very pleased to see Birmingham Airport setting a bold but achievable target to get more air passengers to use public transport to the airport. The government wants an aviation industry which meets its own environmental costs and this initiative supports that vision.'
