Birmingham Airport taxi dispute ‘will not affect passengers’
29.05.09
Birmingham Airport has said that passengers will not be affected by a taxi service dispute. The airport claims that the Birmingham and Solihull Taxi Association (BASTA) has not met ‘service standards' and has therefore cancelled it's licences, with Passenger Transport Solutions (PTS) due to take over from 1 June.
BASTA have said that the dispute is over the association's financial situation, and claims that drivers would not give money to another management service. However, a spokesman for the airport said there had been ‘numerous attempts’ to work with BASTA to ‘rectify various issues surrounding its management of the black cab operation’. But it said it has been unable to meet the service standards the airport expects for ‘passengers and indeed the hackney carriage drivers’.
The airport spokesman added it was also concerned with the ‘financial stability’ of the association and had to make changes to ensure ‘any potential problems did not impact’ on its ability to provide a taxi operation. He said the transfer will enable all hackney carriage drivers who operate at the airport to continue to do so.
