Drug smuggling pensioner jailed for 9 years

A 66-year-old woman hoping her appearance as a ‘white-haired grandmother’ would help her smuggle cocaine in to the UK via Birmingham Airport has been jailed for nine years, the Express & Star reports.
Simone Ferre, from France, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday. The court heard she had more than three pounds of the Class A drug in her hand luggage with an estimated street value of over £150,000.
UK Border Agency (UKBA) officers at Birmingham Airport stopped Ferre when she arrived on a flight via Brussels from Nairobi, Kenya in April this year. Officers searched her luggage and found the cocaine concealed in its base.
Sentencing Ferre Judge Robert Juckes, said: ‘With the appearance of a white-haired grandmother carrying an eccentric coloured bag, you would have more chance of getting away with this.’
