Birmingham Airport replies to 'readers rant' on airport parking charge
28.01.08
The Times has published a ‘readers rant’ on the short term (drop off / collection) parking charge at Birmingham Airport.
Their reader rants: After the terrorist attack at Glasgow airport during the summer, Birmingham Airport moved the passenger drop-off point 30 yards from the departure/arrival doors, which are now protected behind concrete blocks. A good idea, but one that the airport has turned to profit. It now costs £1 for the first 20 minutes to drop off or pick up passengers, and £3 per 15 minutes thereafter. An hour’s free parking is allowed in the long-stay car park, but the distance to the terminals soon eats away at this.
However, a spokesman for Birmingham Airport replied: 'We initially allowed drivers to park in the short-stay car park at no cost for 10 minutes; however, with more than 1m vehicles using the set down roads every year, and poor behaviour by some motorists, this caused gridlock at peak times. As a result, we adopted the current approach to encourage greater use of our other car parks.'
'The short-stay car park is now a rapid-drop-off area with prices designed to encourage passengers to keep the traffic free-flowing. Our motivation has been to ensure the safety of our visitors and to improve traffic flows, not to make money. Indeed, the revenue made from the rapid-drop-off area is less than when it was the short-stay car park.'
