Birmingham Airport runway plan 'could move the goalposts'
23.01.08
Planes will be flying in so low into Birmingham Airport that Birmingham Exiles Rugby Club could be forced to move their goal posts. Although current plans do not affect their ground near the airport, Frank Jewitt, club vice chair told the Evening News yesterday that there is currently an 'issue' about the posts being in the way of aircraft approaching the runway.
Mr Jewitt said: 'At the moment we are not absolutely certain. On the first plan the airport boundary was going to be way beyond us and we were going to be part of a new airport car park. But since then they have been downgraded [after the airport scrapped plans for a new runway], we don't fall within the proposed work, but we do have an issue about the rugby posts possibly being an obstruction on the approach.'
The club has been at the site since the early 1960s. Members will be meeting with airport staff next week to clarify the matter.
