Birmingham Airport emergency
25.09.10
An emergency was declared at Birmingham Airport yesterday after a pilot was forced to shut down one of his engines before landing, the Coventry Telegraph reports. Around 25 firefighters were on standby at the runway after receiving the SOS call from the freight plane at around 01:15 yesterday, but the Air Contractors-run EI-SLK landed safely.
Group chief executive Hugh Flynn, of Air Contractors, said the engine was turned off as a precautionary measure. He added: ‘The crew acted professionally and in accordance with standard procedure. There was no threat posed either to people living in the Birmingham area or indeed the aircraft and two crew members.’
