Union agree lower job cuts at Servisair Birmingham Airport

The Unite union has agreed lower job losses to baggage handlers and check-in staff employed by Servisair at Birmingham Airport. The ground services company had planned to make up to 60 redundancies to fight off the impact of the recession.
A month ago Servisair confirmed it was seeking to cut 60 jobs among baggage handlers and check-in staff, almost a quarter of its total staff at the airport, because of a reduction in flights. It has been hit by the downturn in the aviation sector, the loss of Brussels Airlines and a reduction in Ryanair flights.
John Partridge, deputy regional secretary for the Unite union, said said Servisair had originally been seeking 33 redundancies out of 116 among baggage handling staff and 27 out of 78 among check-in staff. Mr Partridge said staff were now facing just 16 compulsory redundancies among baggage-handling staff following negotiations with Servisair. The GMB union is involved in talks over the check-in job cuts.
He said: ‘The majority of people will leave during November – the people who are selected are expected to work their notices, between two and four weeks. The numbers came down by seasonal people being let go, people who knew they were going to finish by October 31.’
