Birmingham Airport cargo firm staff reject strike action
20.10.09
A potential strike by Birmingham Airport-based cargo workers at Swissport has been averted following a low turn-out for a ballot. John Partridge, deputy regional secretary for the Unite union, said with only 36 employees voting out of a total of 117 – and just 31 in favour of action – walk-outs were ‘not really feasible.’
Union members had accused Swissport of reneging over an agreed pay deal amid claims a 2.75 percent rise had been offered. Swissport said it had paid a 4 percent increase last year and had been unable to offer a subsequent rise following a 19 percent drop in revenue and mounting losses. The company said it had introduced a scheme to share cost-savings with its staff as well as improving other employment benefits.
