Lorry fire shuts Birmingham Airport road

A lorry fire beneath a flyover closed the main road leading from the M42 to Birmingham Airport last night. A mechanical fault is thought to have started the fire on a lorry travelling along the A45 at about 18:15.
The road has been closed due to fears the fire may have caused structural damage to a bridge at the Catherine De Barnes island in Bickenhill Lane. A diversion was in place travelling westbound and the road was due to stay closed until midnight last night, police said. However the airport website indicates that the road is still closed this morning, and is advising passengers to allow extra time for their journey.
