What an extra 405m means to Birmingham Airport
20.01.08
A strip of Tarmac 405 metres long could open up the world for holidaymakers and business travellers from the West Midlands. This is the length of the runway extension that Birmingham Airport recently applied for planning permission to build, and it would pave the way for flights to China, Thailand, Malaysia, the West Coast of America, the Caribbean and South America.
At the moment the airport's main runway, which is just under 2,600 metres long, is too short to allow fully laden jets - with passengers, fuel and cargo - to take off. However, they can land without difficulty because they are carrying less fuel.
If Solihull planners give the green light to the extension, which would take it over the current A45 Birmingham to Coventry dual carriageway road, seeing the road diverted and taken underground via a tunnel, work on the £120 million scheme could start next year. Within three years the airport would be able to handle even more flights to destinations all over the globe.
