£90,000 seized at Birmingham Airport
19.08.09
More than £90,000 in cash has been seized at Birmingham Airport in the past two weeks. The money, which was being taken out of the country in seven separate lots, is believed to be the proceeds of crime.
The money was taken from eight men and one woman of various nationalities. Adrian Farley, of Revenue and Customs said: ‘Cash is only seized if there are reasonable grounds to suspect it is the proceeds of, or is intended for use in, illegal activities. The Proceeds of Crime Act was designed to take the profit out of crime, making it harder for money to be laundered.’
The money will be held for 3 months while investigations are underway. It will be confiscated and returned to the public purse if proven to be associated with crime.
